GOP Must Stop Kicking the Can Down the Road
Washington conservatives, who control the White House, the Senate, and the House of Representatives, have narrowly avoided a government shutdown– for now. At the last possible minute, they crafted a short term solution—a band aid—that kicks the can down the road again and leaves critical initiatives that families across the country depend on in the lurch.
In my opinion, not only is the congressional Majority struggling to keep the lights on, it is also failing to address domestic priorities that have been in limbo for over two months. While focusing all their attention on a deficit-exploding tax plan for billionaires, they failed to reauthorize critical federal initiatives like the Children’s Health Insurance Program, Community Health Centers, the National Flood Insurance Program, and the Perkins Loan Program. This inaction collectively affects sick kids, homeowners, low-income people without affordable access to care, health care providers, young students looking to get their degrees, and millions more. It is shameful.
Thanks to the Majority, I believe Congress will soon be right back where we’ve been for months: on the verge of another government shutdown. This would wreak havoc for veterans looking to secure their benefits, cancer patients undergoing treatment at the National Institutes of Health, and hundreds of thousands of workers across Rochester and the country whose paychecks would be suspended.
We cannot afford this kind of uncertainty. It is past time for the Washington Majority to tackle the American people’s priorities.
