Louise Line: Making Your Stories Heard

March 22, 2017

For the past several months, I’ve asked families across Monroe County to submit stories about how the Affordable Care Act (ACA) has helped them finally access the health care they need and deserve. It’s important that your voices are not drowned out by political spin from lobbyists, Republicans in Washington, and the health insurance industry looking to maximize profits. That’s why today, the night before we vote on the Republican health care bill, I delivered your stories to Speaker Ryan’s door.

Under the ACA, millions of people across the country have finally been able to access health care and millions more have seen substantially improved coverage. The impact on Monroe County alone has been staggering: the uninsured rate has dropped 2.4 percent; 414,800 individuals have coverage through employer-sponsored health care; and nearly 80,000 people are now covered under the Medicaid expansion.

Tomorrow, Congress will vote on the disastrous Republican health care bill. This dangerous plan would force the American public to pay more for worse coverage, if they could afford that coverage at all. It would also give the wealthiest in our nation a nearly one trillion dollar tax break while skyrocketing the cost of health care for everyone else. Individuals who faced discrimination based on pre-existing conditions, gender, and income will be left to fend for themselves again without the ACA’s consumer protections in place.

Repblicans in Washington should know, first-hand, the affect their disastrous plan will have on millions of families across the country. That’s why I am delivering your stories to Speaker Ryan’s office later today. We have no time to waste in working to protect the health care that millions have gained under the ACA and your testimonies play a crucial role in this fight. Please, when you have a chance, send me your story at
