Slaughter Calls on Governor Cuomo to Support Harris Jobs Initiative
ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Today, Congresswoman Louise M. Slaughter (NY-25) released a letter to Governor Andrew Cuomo urging him to assist her with an effort to bring 100-200 out of state jobs to the greater Rochester area at Harris Corporation. Harris, a leading supplier of secure radio communications for commercial and government customers in over 125 countries, employs more than 2,100 people in Monroe Country and is considering bringing additional jobs to the region as part of its acquisition of Exelis Inc.
The Department of Justice has approved the acquisition and the parties are expected to close Friday, May 29.
“Throughout my time in Congress, I have worked aggressively to help strengthen Harris’ operations in New York and increase their significant contributions to our region’s economy,” said Congresswoman Slaughter in her letter to the governor. “My top priority is to create an environment in the Rochester area that drives long term economic development. For this reason, I encourage your full support of Harris Corporation’s competitive proposal to Empire State Development.”

Dear Governor Cuomo,
As you know, I work diligently with the businesses I represent in Congress to sustain and create jobs in Monroe County. Today, I’m writing to urge you to support my effort to bring upwards of 200 jobs to the Rochester area at Harris Corporation.
Throughout my time in Congress, I have worked aggressively to help strengthen Harris’ operations in New York and increase their significant contributions to our region’s economy. As the leading supplier of secure radio communications for government and commercial customers in over 125 countries, Harris employs more than 2,100 in my district. Of particular importance, Harris provides the most innovative communications gear in the world for our Armed Forces, primarily through the cutting-edge work taking place in Rochester.
On April 29, 2015, after years of legislative work and continuous advocacy, I announced that the United States Army awarded Harris a contract that is expected to result in approximately $1.9 billion in company sales over ten years, which will support thousands of local jobs and has positioned the company for significant growth. This was made possible by forcing the Department of Defense to reverse course and open up its Joint Tactical Radio System program to industry competition. Using the forces of competition, the government incentivizes innovation in the marketplace and gains access to the best products at the best price. By creating a fair playing field, we also ensured that Harris employees in Rochester have a secure future.
At the heart of my efforts is an enduring partnership with Harris Corporation’s President and CEO Bill Brown. Mr. Brown is a talented leader who is committed to our community and the success of local Harris operations. We are now entering an exciting period of growth for Harris as they acquire Exelis Inc., another significant local employer. In light of that acquisition, Harris is in the process of applying for aid through Empire State Development to support the transfer of approximately 200 out of state jobs to Rochester. This is an important opportunity for the state to support and add to the substantial momentum of the Finger Lakes region.
My top priority is to create an environment in the Rochester area that drives long term economic development. For this reason, I encourage your full support of Harris Corporation’s competitive proposal to Empire State Development and thank you for your consideration.
