Slaughter Reacts to President Trump’s Latest Travel and Refugee Ban
WASHINGTON, DC — Congresswoman Louise Slaughter (NY-25) released the following statement in reaction to President Trump’s latest travel and refugee ban. This outrageous Executive Order shuts out people from several Muslim nations and ends the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP), running counter to our nation’s fundamental values.
“This is an attempt by the president to try and get a de facto Muslim ban through the courts after the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit unanimously barred his prior order from taking effect. This executive order still bans travel from several Muslim nations, suspends our refugee program, and makes our country less safe by giving groups like ISIS fodder to recruit new members. The fact that this ban takes effect in ten days is a tacit admission by the administration that our country does not, in fact, face some imminent threat as the president previously claimed. No immigrant from any of the countries included in this ban has ever killed an American in a U.S. terrorist attack. This is an immoral attempt to fulfill a campaign talking point, not about keeping our country safe.”
