Slaughter Reacts to the Resignation of General Flynn
WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Louise Slaughter (NY-25) released this statement today in reaction to National Security Advisor Michael Flynn’s resignation late last night. Slaughter called on President Trump to fire Flynn after it was revealed he violated the law by holding secret discussions about sanctions with the Russian ambassador before the presidential inauguration. This contradicted General Flynn’s previous denials, and other recent claims made by White House officials, including Vice President Pence.
“It is troubling to me that General Flynn’s resignation comes amid reports that the White House knew for a month about his inappropriate and illegal conversations with the Russian ambassador. The Trump Administration’s actions suggest that it is not the crime but the resulting bad press that led to this resignation. This is likely just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to this administration’s deeply disturbing relationship with Putin. It is now past time for an independent, bipartisan commission to investigate this matter and for President Trump to release his tax returns. If Congressional Republicans stand in the way of this investigation, they will be complicit in facilitating Putin’s ongoing hold over this president. Every member of Congress took an oath to defend this nation, and they should put this responsibility before partisan politics.”
