Congresswoman Louise Slaughter

Representing the 25th District of New York

Slaughter Statement in Reaction to Director Comey’s Testimony

June 8, 2017
Press Release

WASHINGTON, DC — Congresswoman Louise Slaughter (NY-25) issued the following statement in reaction to former FBI Director James Comey’s testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee earlier today:

“Director Comey’s testimony is a reminder of the old adage that where there’s smoke, there’s fire. His testimony made clear that President Trump likely obstructed justice when he suggested Director Comey back down from what should be an independent FBI investigation into former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn. It is deeply troubling that the head of the FBI had to make notes of meetings out of fear the president might later lie about what happened. I am deeply concerned about where we are headed. It was shameful yesterday when members of the intelligence community refused to answer unclassified questions before the Senate Intelligence Committee. When we’re sworn into Congress, we take an oath to protect the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic. Congress has no more important task than getting to the truth to protect our democracy. We need to create an independent commission like the one created by President Bush following the 9/11 attacks to get to the bottom of Russia’s hold on this administration, wherever it leads.”
