Slaughter Statement on Republicans Attacking Women’s Rights Days After Historic March
WASHINGTON, DC —Rules Committee Ranking Member Louise Slaughter (NY-25) issued the following statement on Republicans attacking women’s rights just days after the historic National Women’s March. This afternoon, the Rules Committee will consider H.R. 7, which would undermine a woman's right to choose and limit access to comprehensive health coverage. This follows President Trump reinstating the global gag rule earlier today, which forces health providers eligible for U.S. assistance to choose between receiving U.S. funding and providing comprehensive health care services to their patients.
“Republicans are continuing their never-ending crusade against Constitutionally-protected abortion services just 48 hours after millions of people across the country and around the globe marched to protect women’s rights. These marches are likely the single largest day of protests in our nation’s history. Instead of listening to the American people, the Majority on the Rules Committee will consider legislation today that would place unprecedented limits on women’s access to reproductive health services even if they want to pay for abortion coverage out of their own pockets. This coincides with President Trump’s move to reinstate the global gag rule, which is a devastating blow to some of the poorest women in the world. It’s clear that President Trump and the Republican Congress have made attacking women’s rights their top priority.”
