Congresswoman Louise Slaughter

Representing the 25th District of New York

Slaughter Statement on Trump Administration’s 2018 Budget Request

May 23, 2017
Press Release

WASHINGTON, DC — Congresswoman Louise Slaughter (NY-25) released the following statement in reaction to President Trump’s budget proposal for Fiscal Year 2018:

“President Trump’s budget proposal is as heartless as it is harmful. This proposal includes a drastic $610 billion cut to Medicaid and a $190 billion cut to food stamps and school lunch programs over the next ten years. It ransacks education programs to the tune of $143 billion, making education costs soar even further for students. The administration’s budget even contradicts President Trump’s own promises to invest in infrastructure by decimating funding for the Highway Trust Fund and eliminating funding for the TIGER programs that are making Inner Loop upgrades and construction of our new train station possible. No sector of society is spared. Even the air we breathe and the water we drink would be put at risk by a proposed 30 percent cut to the Environmental Protection Agency. The president’s budget would also start the clock on the elimination of the National Endowment for the Arts and National Endowment for the Humanities regardless of the fact that they make up less than 0.008 of the federal budget and provide programming in every Congressional district. All this to increase defense spending while working to give a massive tax cut to the wealthy. Members of both parties are already expressing outrage over this request, and I will be fighting to make sure it never becomes a reality.”
